Understanding Frank Meter Configurations

Written by Cory

Electricity meters come in different types depending on how and when power is supplied to your property. Here's a breakdown of the most common Frank meter configurations, what they do, and how they affect your electricity usage and costs.

Uncontrolled Meter (UN24)

  • Configuration Code: UN24

  • Description:

  • One register = one reading

  • Power is available 24 hours a day

  • Commonly used for power points and general appliances

  • Can be the only meter at a property

  • Premium cost per unit due to constant availability

Controlled Meter (CN19 and variations)

  • Configuration Code: CN19, CN18, etc.

  • Description:

  • One register = one reading

  • Includes a relay that allows the Network Company to turn off supply during peak demand

  • The number (e.g., 19) indicates minimum hours of supply per day (actual hours may vary by region)

  • Commonly used for hot water cylinders or underfloor heating

  • Appliances must be permanently wired

  • Must be used with another meter configuration type e.g UN or IN

  • Lower cost per unit

All Inclusive Meter (IN24 or IN19 and variations)

  • Configuration Code: IN24, IN19, etc.

  • Description:

  • One register = one reading

  • Combines features of Uncontrolled and Controlled meters

  • Includes a relay for hot water control during peak demand

  • Power points and lighting have 24-hour supply

  • Can be the only meter at a property

  • Cost per unit is either the same as Uncontrolled or somewhere between Uncontrolled and Controlled

Day/Night Meter (DUN16/NUN8)

  • Configuration Code: DUN16, NUN8

  • Description:

  • Two registers = two readings

  • Provides 24-hour supply

  • Day register: 7am–11pm (or 7am–9pm in Orion/Electra networks)

  • Night register: 11pm–7am (or 9pm–7am in Orion/Electra networks)

  • Can be the only meter configuration combo at a property

  • Day rate is higher than Uncontrolled (except in Wellington)

  • Night rate is lower in most areas

  • In Orion Network, hot water setup varies and may not be easily identifiable

Night Only Meter (NO8 or CN8)

  • Configuration Code: NO8, CN8

  • Description:

  • One register = one reading

  • Includes a relay that turns off power at 7am

  • Supply is available only from 11pm–7am

  • Commonly used for Night Store heaters

  • Must be used with another meter

Solar Meter (EG24)

  • Configuration Code: EG24

  • Description:

  • Records generation sent back to the grid

  • Used with import/export meters

  • Helps track solar energy production
