What’s a kilowatt hour (kWh)?
Electricity is measured in kilowatt hours (kWh) — or “units.”
One unit equals 1,000 watts (1 kW) running for one hour.
Advanced Meters
Bluecurrent Advanced Meters
Your Bluecurrent meter screen changes automatically every eight seconds.
To pause the screen, just press the Select button.
If your property has more than one setup (like Anytime and Controlled), press Select again to scroll through your different meter readings.
Metrix / IntelliHub Meters
These meters work much like Bluecurrent meters — they cycle through several screens but don’t include a “load” screen.
The number of screens depends on your home’s setup — for example, whether you have separately metered hot water or multiple phases.
Here’s what you’ll see:
Test Screen: Lights up all LEDs to check for display faults.
Read Screen: Shows your current meter read.
Comms Screen: Displays the meter’s communication status.
Display Upgrade: Shows if your meter’s scheduled for a routine software update (no action needed).
InCharge (Prepaid) / Freedom Meters
If you’ve got one of the older InCharge or Freedom units near your meter, you can check your reading easily — just press 9 on the keypad, and your current meter read will appear on the screen.
Standard Electricity Meters
These are read left to right, like an odometer on your car.
If the dial sits between two numbers, always take the lower number.
Ignore the red decimal places — we don’t count them when reading.
Clock Dial Meters
Some homes still use older “clock dial” meters. They can be tricky, but here’s how to read them:
Read the four black dials only, left to right.
Write down the number the arrow points to.
If the arrow is between two numbers, take the lower one.
(For example, if it’s between 1 and 2, take 1 — until the next dial passes zero.)
