Preparing for a planned outage

Power outages are never fun — even when they’re planned. But a little preparation can make things a lot smoother. Here’s how to get ready and keep your home (and everyone in it) safe and comfortable.

Protect your appliances

Before the power goes off, turn off or unplug anything that doesn’t love surprises — like computers, modems, TVs, or other sensitive gear.
If you’ve got surge protectors, make sure they’re on duty.

And don’t stress too much about the fridge or freezer — keep the doors closed and your food should stay chilled and safe.

Protect anyone relying on medical equipment

If someone in your home depends on mains-powered medical equipment or electrical support, it’s important to plan ahead.
Make sure you’ve got an emergency plan in place so that if the power goes out, everyone stays safe.
If a loss of power could cause serious harm, please contact your healthcare provider for advice on backup options.

Protect yourself

Even when the lights are off, treat all power lines and equipment as if they’re live — because they could be. Power might come back earlier than expected, and we’d rather you stay safe than be surprised.

Things don’t always go to plan

Sometimes weather or other unexpected events can cause delays or changes to planned outages. We’ll always do our best to stick to the timeframes we’ve shared, and we’re sorry if that doesn’t go exactly as expected.
